Daily Writing Challenge, Day #31 (last one yay!)

My Word-of-the-Day Challenge

Directions: Use the Word of the Day from Merriam-Webster.com from the month of August in a scene; each day’s post must be a continuation of the previous day’s post.

Word count limit: 150 words

August 31, 2021, Merriam-Webster Word of the Day: desultory (adj.)

Definition:

1: marked by lack of definite plan, regularity, or purpose

2: not connected with the main subject; distracting

3: disappointing in progress, performance, or quality

They made six more stops before noon, with only two remaining, all of which went infinitely better than Bjorn’s first, however their stomachs demanded a desultory pause for lunch.

Roar suggested they meet at a quaint sandwich shop that they’d driven past twice throughout the morning and which Bjorn, neither time, had noticed. With purchased specialty sandwiches in hand, they went outside to eat, since the four tables inside were occupied, and sat on the ledge under the store’s awning with a view of a flower shop across the narrow two-lane street. Stomachs snarling, they unwrapped their sandwiches.

“Mmm good.” Chewing, Roar smiled like a child feasting on cake. “So. Are you really gonna volunteer at the tournament?”

Mouth full, Bjorn bobbed his head without speaking. After a moment, he reported, “This sandwich is phenomenal. Which one did I get, again?”

“The Teddy Melt.”

“Who’s Teddy?”

“Excuse me, guys?” The woman who had been at the cash register poked her head out the front door. “Roar, can I talk to you for a sec?”

End of Challenge! Word count: 174 (Yes, the word count is over 150 but I don’t care anymore, it’s over)

My August writing challenge is over, thank goodness! (I’ll briefly review my experience with a month-long daily writing challenge in my next post, instead of adding it here.) Have a happy weekend, everyone.
