August 18, 2021, Merriam-Webster Word of the Day: defenestration (n.)

Definition:

1: a throwing of a person or thing out of a window // assassination by defenestration

2: a usually swift dismissal or expulsion (as from a political party or office)

“Zaida!” Susan flicked Zaida’s ear, earning a squeak.

“Ow! What?!” Hand over her ear, Zaida followed Susan’s nod to Roar and sobered at his wounded expression. “Oh. Sorry.”

With dessert served and Susan seated once again, the women watched Roar pick up a fork and numbly cut into the tender yellow cake with red and white frosting. “She’s not wrong…” He then leered at Zaida.

She twitched, a little flustered. “What are you thinking?”

“The word ‘defenestrated’ comes to mind.”

Zaida looked at Susan who shrugged, translating the word as meaning that she was ‘grounded’.

“Um, no.” No longer affected, Roar put his sass on. “It means death-by-being-thrown-out-a-window.”

Hands under the table and hunched forward, Zaida gaped at him with a degree of twisted annoyance for which there were no words and then, dismissively, took a massive bite of cake as if food was more important than humoring stupid people.

word count: 150

NOTE: This should’ve been posted last night but when I got home from work, after I ate and showered, I sat on my bed with my laptop to edit the post and passed out at some point. My bad.
