At the front desk of the police station, a uniformed officer in his twenties answered the ringing phone. “Carie Police Station, Officer Wellman speaking… Oh hey…”
Wellman, putting the caller on hold, swiveled in his chair and shouted down a short hallway. “Detective! Is Bjorn single?”
In the squadroom, Dufort looked across at Bjorn with an expression that said ‘Are you?”
Clearing his throat, Bjorn shouted back, “Yes!”
Wellman put the phone to his ear and punched the red ‘hold’ button. “Yes,” he told the caller. “No prob.” He then hung up and resumed staring hard at a clipboard.
That was odd. Bjorn asked the detective, “Who was that?”
“That’s Officer Brandon Wellman.” Dufort kvelled about the virtues and accomplishments of the dedicated officer on night desk duty—
“No, sir, I mean who’d ask about me? I don’t know anyone.”
When Dufort yelled for clarification, the officer replied, “Saj, sir!”
